If you want to add some variety to your summer, there’s still time to put together a team to enter the inaugural Variety Splash (28 February – 1 March 2008) – a friendly and action-packed fundraising boat rally around Port Phillip Bay.
Variety, the children’s charity is aiming to raise $150,000 from the event, which will go towards providing Australia's sick, disadvantaged and Special Needs children with utilities and life experiences. The entry fee for participants also classifies as a tax-deductible donation.
Best of all, you don’t even need a boat to be involved in this great cause! Head to the Variety Splash website – www.varietysplash.org.au – to peruse the selection of sail and powerboats (complete with crew) that’s available for corporate or private teams to book.
Places are filling fast and, according to event co-ordinator James Ware, the most sought-after boats have attracted a lot of interest and are disappearing quickly.
“There are still some absolute gems available for charter, including the first of the three Kookaburra boats built,” Mr Ware said.
“This particular vessel is famous as the yacht which won the right to defend the 1987 America's Cup.
“The opportunity to spend three days aboard a piece of Australia’s sporting history like Kookaburra is just priceless, and we’re expecting this opportunity will be hotly contested.”
With berths filling fast, and the January deadline for entries rapidly approaching, now is the time to get your team together, before the silly season really gets underway!
