Reliability and fuel efficiency are the key reasons why internationally-renowned freelance photojournalist and fishing documentary producer Alistair McGlashan chooses Honda four-stroke outboards.
Spending more than 250 days on the water each year, regularly travelling long distances to the Continental Shelf photographing spectacular tuna and billfish action and filming for the Strikezone DVD series, the demands placed on all of his equipment are extreme – be it a camera, a boat or an outboard engine.
“At last count, I’d racked-up more than 600 hours in less than a year on my BF90-powered centre console boat, as well as over a 1000 hours on Mick Lyons’ twin-BF90 vessel Geronimo,” Alistair said.
“Fishing more than 30nm out to sea in often less than favourable conditions, engine reliability is critical to get everyone onboard back to shore in safety, with miserly fuel consumption running a close second.”
February has seen a great marlin bite off the east coast’s Port Stephens and, even with the 25nm runs to and from the fishing grounds in the twin-BF90 rig, Alistair said they’d used under 100lt of fuel each trip.
“Expert engineering has resulted in engines that are ultra-quiet and vibration-free at trolling speeds and at idle, so we leave them running all day, even while filming,” he said.
“The fact these engines have returned such impressive fuel flow figures really says something about Honda’s advanced technology – but what else would you expect from the largest engine manufacturer in the world?
“Whether we’re chasing a marlin or tuna for the camera or punching home into a heavy sea, it’s logical why our boats have Hondas – we know they’ll always get us home and it won’t cost us a fortune in fuel to do it all again tomorrow!”
